Although there is no definite information about the construction date of the Galata Tower, which was once called the Tower of Christ, MS. It is thought to have been built in the early 500's.
Galata Tower, located in Istanbul Beyoğlu, has been a structure used for different purposes since Istanbul has been under the sovereignty of many states throughout history (Romans, Venetians, Genoese and Ottomans).
Galata region was registered as the 13th of 14 districts of Istanbul during the Romans period. It is also divided into districts within itself. The first settlement date is accepted as the Roman period.
With the weakening of the Roman State in the 1200s, the Genoese surrounded the Galata region with walls made of dense stones. They built a watchtower on the highest part of the historical region. The Genoese called this tower the Tower of Christ, but later it was named the Galata Tower.
